摘要:<正>Bay scallop populations in the Peconic Bays of eastern Long Island,New York,USA were decimated by a series of ’brown tide’(Aureococcus anophagefferens) algal blooms from 1985-1995.Following the last of these events,commercial fishery landings remained at 1-2%of historical levels for 12 years.Bay scallop stocks probably did not recover on their own during this time because densities and total population sizes of scallops in local embayments were too low to permit high rates of successful fertilization during spawning,thus limiting recruitment.Our present restoration efforts,begun in 2006,have focused on jump-starting populations by planting >5 million hatchery-reared scallops at high densities,in lantern nets or directly to the bottom,to ensure a high probability of fertilization for eggs spawned by these broodstock.In the 6 years since we started our current restoration efforts,compared to the 2 years prior, larval recruitment and juvenile scallop densities in natural populations adjacent to our primary spawner sanctuary have increased more than 89x and 60x,respectively.Unplanted areas did not exhibit population increases for 1-3 years following initiation of restoration efforts,but population rebuilding is now widespread throughout the Peconic Bays.Annual commercial bay scallop landings are now 13-30x higher than those recorded from 1996-2007 and have contributed~US$20 million to the local economy since restoration commenced.
