摘要:Calcium is the most abundant mineral in our body responsible for strong bones and teeth. Its dietary deficiency leads to osteoporosis, besides playing a significant role in pathogenesis of other diseases like diabetes and hypertension.Postmenopausal women by virtue of their hypo-oestrogen state, tend to have weaker bones and hence the recommended daily allowance(RDA) is 800 mg/day in India.Considering the food culture of our population, this RDA could only be achieved by supplementing calcium.Studies have also shown that an adequate dietary calcium intake along with moderate physical activity enhances the bone health and prevents fractures. Our study which aimed to study dietary calcium intake and physical activity levels revealed unacceptably low levels of both these important factors.
