LABORATORY SHEAR TESTS OF SOILS RELATED TO TRANS-TOKYO BAY HIGHWAY PROJECT

摘要:<正>Some of the findings obtained in a series of laboratory shear tests of soils for the design of a 15.1 km-long highway crossing Tokyo Bay will be described. The construction works are planned to start this year, 1989. The highway project will consist of a 10 km-long shield-driven tunnel, two man-made islands and a 5km-long bridge. Topics discussed in this lecture include; (1) the outline of the geotechnical investigation and, (2) the strength and deformation properties of both cement-treated sand for constructing the man-made islands and cement-treated samples of existing soft clay deposits, studied by means of triaxial compres sion tests. The following two topics, though relevant to the project, have been discussed elsewhere and have not been repeated here: (3) the undrained shear strength and the deformation properties at very small strains of soft clays, studied by means of triaxial compression and extension tests, torsional shear tests and cyclic triaxial tests, and (4) the liquefaction strength of compacted sand and settlements in sand due to cyclic undrained loading, studied by means of the cyclic triaxial tests, the cyclic torsional shear tests and the cone oenetration tests in a calibration chamber.
