Microfluidic chip with embedded etched optic fibers for the detection of Escherichia coli in sewage from ships

摘要:The pathogenic bacteria in sewage discharged from ships are a great threat to the marine environment and port security.However,most of the Port State Control(PSC)regimes do not have an effective method for inspecting sewage discharge,therefore,a rapid detection instrument for pathogenic bacteria in sewage is urgently needed.This paper presents a single cell level detection method that senses laser-induced fluorescence using a simple and effective optical detection system consisting of a microfludic chip with the embedded etched optic fibers.This system combined with a signal detection amplification circuit,allows for the signal cell detection of Escherichia coli(E.coli) in sewage disposal from ships.We performed experiments on fluorescent particles,as well as E.coli stained with Fluorescein diacetate(FDA),and confirmed the feasibility of using this system to detect small particles including bacterial cells at the single cell level.
