The relationship between surface roughness and shear strength of irregular rock joints

摘要:<正>The correct evaluation of the shear strength of rock joints plays an important role in the design, construction and management of rock engineering.Based on the measurement of rough profiles of irregular rock joints and the results of shear tests under constant normal stresses for different surface roughness,a new method is developed for quantifying the surface roughness of rock joints.That is,surface roughness can be represented by the average roughness angle,which is calculated through the linear slope and the fractal parameters(amplitude and fractal dimension)of the several profiles on joint surfaces.And the empirical criterion is suggested for modeling and predicting the shear strength of irregular rock joints at low normal stresses.
